3 Ways to Create Sacred Space in Your Life

As the weather starts to cool down and we get ready to spend more time indoors, I’ve been spending a lot of time making sure that my home is nice and cozy. I’ve been feeling inspired to switch things up in my home to ensure that every room is a space that I love. Since I’m in major redecoration mode, I’ve started thinking about the need for sacred space in our lives, both literally and figuratively. Here are 3 ways that you can start to create more sacred space for yourself.

  1. Start at Home

Your home is your sanctuary. It is your retreat away from the outside world, and the place where you feel safest. Take a look around your home and ask yourself, “Does my home feel like a safe haven? Does it feel special and sacred? Do I enjoy coming home?” If you answered no, or had to think about these answers, don’t worry! It’s very simple to start to change it. My favorite way to create sacred space at home is to light candles. Everything feels cozier and more special in candlelight. I’ve started an evening ritual of lighting my fall scented candles and snuggling up on the couch to read every evening. It is something so simple, but has become my favorite part of the day! Some other ideas for making your home feel more sacred are clearing clutter, opening windows to let fresh energy in, putting up motivational quotes, snuggling with soft blankets, and hanging up pictures of your loved ones. You can even create an altar, which is simply a collection of meaningful items that make you feel happy and connected. An altar can be a little table where you put up a picture of your family, some seashells or gem stones, and a special candle. Every time you look at your altar, you can say a quick prayer or just take a moment to feel happy and connected. Use these ideas to get you started on creating more sacred space in your home.

  1. Find Your Happy Place

We all have a place that makes us feel instantly happy to be there. For me, it’s always been the beach. I remember going to the beach as a young girl and instantly feeling happy and at peace. It was as if all of my worries faded away looking at the ocean. What’s your happy place? Maybe it’s the beach, a park, or a waterfall. Maybe you feel happiest at church, at your favorite coffee shop, or at your grandmother’s kitchen table. Take a moment to think about the place that instantly brings up good feelings for you. Then, take some time to go there! You can also take a picture of this special place to keep on your desk, or make it the screensaver on your phone or computer. Your happy place is another sacred space that you can turn to whenever you need it.

  1. Make Time for Emotional Space

We all need emotional sacred space in our lives. When every moment of your day is tied up with running from one activity to the next, constantly surrounded by others and caring for their needs, you have very little time to breathe. It is important to find time every day to take some sacred space to yourself. This can be as simple as taking 5 deep breaths before you get out of bed in the morning and saying to yourself “Thank you for the gift of today. Today will be an amazing day.” Your day has even more of a chance of turning out amazing if you continue to create sacred space for yourself as you move through the day. You can start the morning with a cup of your favorite tea, go for a walk on your lunch break, play your favorite music while making dinner, or light a candle and read in bed at the end of the night. Start to cultivate intentional moments of stillness in your life, and you will feel more spacious and at peace.
