3 Ways to Make Your Life Feel Like a Vacation

cape may 10
I just got home from a short vacation in Cape May with my little family. Cape May is one of our favorite places in the world, and it always feels a little sad to leave. But shortly after settling back in at home, I realized how nice it feels to be back in our home environment. Angelo and I are always talking about how lucky we are to have a life that we love coming home to. I know this isn’t the case for everybody, and it most certainly was not always the case for me, so I thought I would share some tips on how to make your everyday life feel more like a vacation. We spend most of our lives in our daily routines, so it makes so much sense to make the daily grind feel as good as possible, rather than waiting to enjoy the one week of the year that we have to get away. I’m feeling motivated to make my life even more vacation-like than ever. Here’s how I plan to do it and I hope it serves you too.
1. Set the Scene

Think about your dream destination and what you love about that environment. Are you at a cozy bed and breakfast with open windows overlooking the beach? Or a spa destination with luxurious sheets and natural beauty products? Or maybe you are at a trendy hotel with lots of rich colors and fabrics? Think about what attracts you to this place and how you can start to incorporate more of that into your home. I am going to recreate the feel of my favorite Cape May hotel at home by making my bed with crisp white sheets and lighting candles with scents that remind me of nature and the ocean. One of our favorite parts of vacation was hanging out at the pool listening to live music and soaking in the tropical vibe. I’m going to recreate this at home by bringing more bright colors into our backyard decor, getting a baby pool for June to splash around in, & making a vacation playlist of chill songs to relax to. This will help me turn our outdoor living space into a special place for us to enjoy the rest of the summer. What colors, scents, and sounds can you bring in to your home to create a more pleasant environment?

2. Unplug

One of the best things about being on vacation is that it gives us a chance to unplug and disconnect from our daily routine. The best moments I had on my vacation were the times when I was so wrapped up in what was happening in the present moment that I wasn’t looking at my phone. When we take time to unplug and disconnect from the crazy busy world of the internet, we have so much more time to truly embrace and appreciate the present moment. We are better able to connect with ourselves and the people we love. This was a huge takeaway for me on this trip. I am going to keep this going at home by starting a new habit of consciously unplugging from my phone and computer everyday from 8pm-8am so that I can really enjoy uninterrupted time with my family. Can you commit to taking some time each day away from technology in order to connect more deeply with yourself and your loved ones?

3. Treat Yourself

Vacations give us an opportunity to indulge in life’s little luxuries. Part of what makes vacations so special is that we use them as an excuse to put aside our rigid diets and schedules, and treat ourselves to something out of the ordinary. It feels good to give ourselves a little something special, whether it’s an ice cream cone, a massage, or a glass of champagne. We don’t need to be on vacation in order to indulge in life’s simple pleasures. In fact, incorporating these little treats into our daily routine can go a long way to making us feel happier. By treating ourselves, we are showing ourselves that we are worthy of the good things life has to offer. On my recent vacation I spent a lot of time reading, going for walks, and doing yoga outside. These are all things I love to do but don’t always make time for in my everyday life. I also indulged in some local fudge and beer from the Cape May brewery. I am going to add more pleasure to my life by incorporating some of these activities into my daily routine and adding occasional treats to my weekly meals. What can you do to treat yourself regularly?
